The Outdoor Herb Garden -- A Beautiful Sanctuary

If you love gardening or want to start gardening as a hobby, there is nothing better than the outdoor herb garden. Herbs are not just beautiful, but useful. When you walk into a landscaped herb garden you automatically feel more at peace with the world. The fragrance of fresh herbs growing under the sunshine is one of the most pleasant you will ever enjoy. Even the act of planting herbs outdoors is an enriching experience.

You will need to decide what kind of herbs you want to plant. Most all herbs do wonderfully outdoors and like plenty of sun and moisture. It's a good idea to read some books about herbs to learn more about the optimum growing conditions of the herbs you want to plant. There are certainly plenty of books out there to choose from. A few good titles for an outdoor garden are as follows: Herbs: Gardens, Decorations and Recipes by Emelie Tolley, Herb Garden Design by Ethne Clark, The Sage Cottage Cookbook: Celebrations, Recipes and Herb Gardening Tips for Every Month of the Year by Dorry Norris and Making an Herb Garden: Beautiful Designs, Plantings and Ornamentation by Catherine Mason.

Many gardeners like to create a design for their herb garden. For example, herb gardens can be artfully arranged using paving stones to partition off the area. You can even choose to plant your herbs in a decorative shape, such as a heart, star, Celtic knot or butterfly. Of course, the traditional garden layout is fine for herbs as well. An English cottage garden layout lends itself to herb growing as well. With this type of layout herbs are grouped closely together, with the tallest in the back. Cottage gardens often use vertical space like hanging baskets and decorative lattice.

Another resource that can help you plan your outdoor herb garden is the Internet. In addition to web sites about gardening you will find online groups, clubs, forums and message boards devoted to gardening. There are even groups and boards devoted especially to gardening herbs. By socializing and networking with other gardeners you can learn from their expertise, share ideas, and even build friendships. Often, more experienced gardeners can offer tips that you may not have known about otherwise. You may also want to join a gardening club in your local area. Gardening is a fun solitary pursuit but can also be enjoyed in a group setting.
